The Global Reporting Initiative (GRI)

One of the leaders in sustainability reporting since 1997, the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) is a resource for businesses seeking to improve their accountability in terms of sustainability. The organization seeks to educate executives across the planet about CSR reporting. They published the first set of global guidelines for sustainability reporting, and they regularly update these guidelines making them consistently relevant to corporations and policy makers. The triple bottom-line is at the forefront of the GRI, since different sections of the guidelines allow businesses to report on various social, environmental, and economic impacts of their operations. Another set of standards that it can be compared to (though there are obvious and distinct differences) is the Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP). Each part of the specific reporting guidelines can be shown in a different cell of the P3 matrix, showing its relevance and ability to help conceptualize these ideas. Though perhaps designed with larger firms in mind, the GRI is a great reference for any business seeking to be more sustainable.
